  36. A. Network Installation
  37.  
  38. This product is designed as a "stand-alone" application and does
  39. not support use by multiple users over a network.
  40.

  42. B. Under Windows 3.1, this product works best with Windows
  43. operating in a 386-enhanced mode with a 10 MB permanent swap file
  44. established on a non-compressed drive.

  47. C. Installation Instructions
  48.  
  49. 1. Please disable any screen savers installed on your system. These
  50. could interfere with the installation program.
  51.  
  52. 2. SoftKey suggests you exit all applications before installing
  53. this product. Other programs and drivers running on the computer
  54. could interfere with the installation process.
  55.  
  56. 3. Installing For Windows 95
  57.  
  58. Simply place the CD in the CD-ROM drive.  The Windows 95
  59. Autoplay function will automatically offer the option to install
  60. the program. Click on "Install" to begin the installation.
  61.  
  62. If the Edison CD is already in the CD-ROM drive and you have
  63. bypassed the Autoplay function, follow these steps to begin the
  64. installation: Click on the "Start" button and select "Run ...".
  65. In the "Open" box, type "X:\SETUP.EXE" (where "X" is the letter
  66. of your CD-ROM drive) and press Enter. For example, if your CD
  67. drive is drive D, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and press Enter.
  68.  
  69. When the program has finished installing the files, it will
  70. notify you that the installation has been completed. When you
  71. want to use the program, simply insert the CD into your CD-ROM
  72. drive and click "Begin" or "Skip Intro" when asked if you want
  73. to run the program. To start the program when the CD is already
  74. in your CD-ROM drive, click on the "Start" button, choose
  75. "Programs", choose "Compton's Home Library", and then choose
  76. "Edison".

  78. 4. Installing For Windows 3.1

  80. From the Program Manager, open the "File" menu and select
  81. "Run...". In the "Command Line" box type "X:\SETUP.EXE",
  82. replacing the letter "X" with the actual letter of your CD
  83. drive. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive "D", type
  84. "D:\SETUP.EXE" and press Enter.

  88.    - 486SX 33 MHz or better computer

  101. This product has been successfully tested with a wide variety of
  102. hardware and peripheral equipment. It should be noted, however,
  103. that Microsoft Windows is a "device-independent" operating
  104. system which relies on device drivers to communicate with the
  105. various devices on your system, and, occasionally, issues may
  106. occur with one of these drivers. Conflicts with sound cards,
  107. video displays and printers are often resolved by reconfiguring
  108. or updating the device drivers supplied by the manufacturers.
  109. This product is not designed specifically for compatibility with
  110. any particular hardware item.
  111.  
  112. This product is intended to support Windows(TM) version 3.1,
  113. 3.11, and Windows(TM)'95.  Use with OS/2 or Windows NT
  114. is not advised or supported.
  115.  
  116. 1. Be sure that your computer system meets minimum specifications as 
  117. detailed on the product package. If your system meets the 
  118. minimum requirements and still does not perform properly, make 
  119. sure your video and sound cards are installed properly 
  120. according to the manufacturer's recommendations and that the 
  121. device driver files are the most recently released versions 
  122. available. Many manufacturers have forums for this purpose with 
  123. on-line systems like, CompuServe and America Online.
  124.  
  125. Take steps to prevent memory managers in DOS and Windows from
  126. using the video card's memory area (consult the manual that came
  127. with your video card).  You may also try using the standard "Super VGA"
  128. display driver that comes with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (available
  129. on the Microsoft driver BBS).

  132. A. Troubleshooting for Windows 95
  133.  
  134. Be sure to check our on-line forum for the latest updates on
  135. technical information (see "Contacting SoftKey ..." below).
  136.  
  137. 1. Locating Possible Conflicts
  138.  
  139. To find potential conflicts with your hardware that might be
  140. causing problems with this product, use the Windows 95
  141. Device Manager. Click on the Windows 95 "Start" menu, select
  142. "Settings", then select "Control Panel". In the resulting
  143. window, double-click on the "System" icon. Then click on the
  144. "Device Manager" tab. Look in the resulting list for yellow
  145. warning triangles with "!" in them. If you find any such
  146. triangles, click once on the item to highlight it and then click
  147. the "Properties" button. Windows 95 will display a dialog box
  148. that explains the status of that device. Consult your Windows 95
  149. or computer system manual for more information.

  153. B. Troubleshooting for Windows 3.1
  154.  
  155. 1.  "GPF in Module ???.DRV"
  156.  
  157. These error messages are often related to the video driver being
  158. used by Windows. They can often be resolved by changing the
  159. video resolution to "640x480 with 256 colors".
  160.  
  161.    NOTE: If you have a 2MB accelerated video card, contact your
  162.          video card's manufacturer for updated drivers instead
  163.          of installing the Super VGA drivers.
  164.  
  165. 2. "CDR-lOl" or "Not Ready Reading (CD-ROM drive)"
  166.  
  167. Error messages related to the computer's ability to read the CD
  168. can often be resolved by one of the following suggestions:
  169.  
  170.       * Make sure that the CD is clean and free of scratches.
  171.         CDs can be washed in warm water and dish washing liquid.
  172.         Scratched CDs should be replaced.
  173.  
  174.       * Don't cache the CD-ROM drive. If your computer is using
  175.         DOS version 6.20 or later and the SMARTDRV caching
  176.         driver, add a "/U" argument to the line that loads
  177.         SMARTDRV in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The line may appear
  178.         as "C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X /U". For more information on
  179.         SMARTDRV, type "HELP SMARTDRV" at the DOS prompt.
  180.  
  181.       * Assign twenty buffers to reading the CD. This is done
  182.         by setting the "/M:" argument on the MSCDEX line to 20.
  183.         The line may appear as "C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001
  184.         /M:20". For more information on MSCDEX, type "HELP
  185.         MSCDEX" at the DOS prompt.

  187. C. CD-ROM Troubleshooting
  188.  
  189. Users whose CD-ROM drives have difficuty reading CDs such as this, 
  190. which contain a very large amount of information, will often find 
  191. that such errors are eliminated by obtaining the latest revision of 
  192. the CD-ROM driver files from their drive's manufacturer.
